A beautiful mural

News | September 26, 2019

Lucas Teasdale has been painting his whole life. He’s been taking art lessons since he was 4 years old. At his family’s kitchen table, or living room couch, or desk in his bedroom, Lucas enjoys exploring all different kinds of art – digital, animation, inks, watercolors.

“Honestly, you can name any medium, and I would find a way to enjoy it,” said Lucas, who is a senior at Davenport Central High School.

Over the summer, he took his talent to Madison Elementary School, where he painted a mural of the school’s mascot, the Mustangs. The idea came from a few different places: St. Paul partners with Madison Elementary School, which is across the street from the church. Lucas’ brother, Thompson, previously painted a mural at the school, upstairs from where Lucas painted. And, of course, Lucas’ love of art.

He painted when he could, between a busy summer of camps and putting time into researching where he will go to college next year. Interestingly, the mural is created with house paint – it will help the mural endure kids appreciating the art with their hands. The mural is located in the school cafeteria.

Lucas credits his art teachers, including Pat Bereskin, who has been his art teacher for as long as he can remember. He also is grateful for his teachers at school – at Central, he is taking art classes this year that are giving him the opportunity to spend significant time on his portfolio.

He knows that he would like to focus on illustration and animation in college. He also knows he wants to stay in the Midwest for his studies – “family is a big part of my life,” he said. Professionally, Lucas said, “I hope to be able to do artwork I enjoy. I want to be able to enjoy my practice.”

His mom, Cynthia Weeks, couldn’t be prouder of Lucas.

Steve Mielenhausen and Debbie Weindruch (school leaders) shared their vision for the cafeteria with Lucas before the end of the school year. After working on his illustrative interpretation in a concept sketch, Lucas meet again with Steve and Debbie to get their approval before commencing the sketching and painting process. The entire project took him approximately 40 hours.

“As a mother and St. Paul member, I am so very pleased that both Thompson and Lucas have contributed their artistic expression for the kids at Madison Elementary,” she added. “I’m a lucky mama!”

You are a talented artist. Your mustangs remind me of horses cavorting in a field. Have a great senior year.

I love this Cynthia! It’s just terrific that young people can share their art with other kids. Both Thompson and Lucas are such great role models. I will be sure to go to the cafeteria and see the mural the next time I’m at Madison. The Madison kids are lucky kids!

Great work Lucas! I hope your passion for art can be your life work…for if you have the passion it won’t really be work! Have fun during your senior year.
