For all the saints

News | October 31, 2019

This weekend, a bell will toll. The names of beloved from St. Paul who died this past year will be read out loud at worship. Candles will be lit.

We will remember, with deep gratitude, these precious lives: Parents, spouses, siblings, grandparents, friends.

For all the saints, who from their labors rest…

All Saints Day is this first Sunday of November. It celebrates living saints, too. “All saints are believers in Jesus Christ, both those living on earth and those living in heaven,” the Lutheran Confessions say.

Who Thee by faith before the world confess…

So as we remember this day those who have entered life eternal, we give thanks for the saints among us — knowing we are simultaneously saint and sinner, embraced in God’s grace: Parents, spouses, siblings, grandparents, friends.

Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest…
