Mission begins with you

Pastoral Messages | January 15, 2026

Sitting here today, as my part-time position ends for the year, I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve St. Paul as giving ministry coordinator. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into but from my first day, I have been constantly impressed with the warmth and genuineness of the staff at St. Paul. Working as a team to ensure that we have a successful pledge campaign plan has allowed me to develop a much deeper understanding of the large scope of St. Paul’s ministry.

It’s not taken for granted how our mission at St. Paul is accomplished. To bring a few of our wonderful aspects to mind: having a church building that can host a wide variety of functions and a staff that fills our hearts and minds with the glory of God through teaching, preaching, listening, and loving. There are the new technologies that allow us to receive God’s message and interact with the church and each other even when being physically present at St. Paul is not possible and the opportunities for people of all ages to gather in God’s name to learn, laugh, and love together. This mission supports organizations focused on spreading the love of Jesus around the Quad City area and the world – ALL of these for the glory of God.

Each of these and so much more does not and could not happen without the budget planning that occurs in January (happening right now!) based on your pledging for 2026.

One thing I did not anticipate when taking on this position was the feelings I would experience daily. During the planning of JOY weekend back in November, I collaborated on the crafting of the JOY letters. This unexpected crafting opportunity allowed me to share in the use of some creative energy and was so much fun. I cannot begin to explain the feeling of joy, love, appreciation, gratitude, etc. I feel when receiving your pledges. I often just sit back in my chair and thank the Lord for being surrounded by so many faithful St. Paul people who give knowing that their financial support of St. Paul impacts the world for God’s glory in ways they may never know!

Because of you, St. Paul works.

I look at the mission on our website:

St. Paul Lutheran Church is a faith community, shaped around five core values: radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith formation, courageous service, extravagant generosity.

…and again, I say Thank You! Thank you for the faith that your financial pledge to St. Paul will be used to support our mission. It is an invaluable responsibility of a church member to faithfully support their church. St. Paul relies 100% on the giving of our members to achieve the big vision and mission of this special place and that begins with you.

2 Corinthians 9:7 shares “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Thank you for making up your mind to support St. Paul Lutheran Church.

In case I forget to say it, thank you for your extravagant generosity and, on a personal note, for the wonderful relationships I have formed through this position at St. Paul. It’s great knowing that we have a community that shares the responsibility of allowing St. Paul to accomplish great things for the Glory of God!

God Bless,

-Tony Runkle, giving ministry coordinator
