Peter Marty named publisher of The Christian Century
Chicago, Illinois – The board of directors of The Christian Century, the flagship journal of Protestant thinking in America, has named Pastor Peter W. Marty as publisher.
Marty’s role will be to advance the vision and financial strength of the publication, expand its digital reach, and position it as a continued leader in the marketplace of religious news, commentary, and scholarship. He will begin his work as publisher on Feb. 1.
John Buchanan, a Presbyterian pastor who led The Christian Century since 1999, retired at the end of 2015. David Heim continues as executive editor.
“I am thrilled to be joining the community of gifted writers and intellectually curious readers known as The Christian Century,” said Marty. “While navigating the rapidly changing worlds of print and digital media is an industry-wide challenge, the opportunities in this publishing niche are many. I look forward to helping shape America’s conversation about religion and faith in public life.”

Marty is senior pastor at St. Paul. He will continue to serve St. Paul while leading The Christian Century. Marty is a graduate of Colorado College and Yale Divinity School. He was named “Parish Pastor of the Year” in 2010 by the Academy of Parish Clergy. He speaks and preaches at churches and conferences across the country, and writes for a variety of journals and publications.
The Christian Century, a bi-weekly publication, covers theological, moral, and cultural issues of the day through feature articles, news, blogs, poetry, book/film/music reviews, and editorials. With the tagline “thinking critically and living faithfully,” The Century, as it is often referred to, is known for its reasoned and passionate voice in diverse religious circles. Its public witness, gifted writers, and thoughtful inquiry make it a popular resource for reflective and engaged Christians.
